California’s Senate Bill 1383 mandates all cities to recycle yard waste, food scraps and other organic waste, resulting in new trash collection services and rates for the City of South El Monte and its residents.

Effective January 1, 2022

All residents are required to separate yard trimmings, food waste and food-soiled paper products from their trash and place them in a three-container system provided by the City’s franchisee waste hauler Athens Services. Residents have three options to chose from for the size of their trash containers: 96-gallon, 64-gallon, and 35-gallon. All three containers will be the same size;

  • Black Container = Trash
  • Blue Container = Recyclables
  • Green Container = Organic Waste (Yard Trimmings & Food Scraps)

Rates

As of January 1, 2022, there is a monthly trash collection service rate for residents based on the selected trash carts size. Other optional and add-on residential services are available and priced.

The rates are necessary to address the state mandates and increase cost in providing solid waste and recycling services. The rates were approved at the City Council Meeting of September 14, 2021. Prior to the meeting, the City issued a written notice to all property owners in the City, notifying them of the rate proposal and the right to “protest” at this duly noticed public hearing.
